Anxiety and depression are the direct by-products of the fast-paced life style that the human race has adopted. “Keep pace with time or time will leave you behind” has become the mantra of the modern day man. This blind race for survival of the fittest has led to the obvious result that we have cut ourselves off from human company. Lonely, secluded lifestyle has become the modern day hall mark where everyone is chasing after money and perfection instead of building stronger relationships with those around them. No wonder, every other person suffers from anxiety, despair and depression.

Depression is not something that can be overcome within a day. You need to take small steps to climb that hill. One small step at a time. Momentum builds up when you put more and more effort into driving yourself towards that ultimate goal of happiness. Sheer will power is the basic need for it. Without it, you’ll be lost in that pit of despair. Following are some ways to overcome depression that will help you regain most, if not all, of your normal life.

  • DON’T LET YOURSELF BE ALONE

Backing yourself into a corner, telling everyone to leave you alone, wallowing in misery and contemplating the cruelty of life is not the solution. Get up and go out. Meet people. Company makes you forget your own agony and takes your mind off the stuff that is bothering you.

  • TALK ABOUT IT

Share your anxieties with your significant other. Sometimes, all it needs is someone who can listen to you to snap you out of it. Sharing with a close friend or a family member helps you let go of the things you have been holding on to. Just let it all out.

  • FEEL THE SUN ON YOUR SKIN

Go out. Feel the nature’s cure, the sunlight, which is being showered upon you in abundance. Sunlight helps build up vitamin D in your body that is essential for proper functioning of dopamine, serotonin and nor-epinephrine, the neurotransmitters of the nervous pathways concerned with happiness and pleasure. Exposure to sunlight also helps keep your circadian rhythms in check, ensuring that your internal clock is working properly. This is important to regulate your sleep/wake cycles. A word of caution, don’t over-expose yourself to the sunlight.

  • EXERCISE ON A DAILY BASIS

Aerobic exercises (jogging, swimming, brisk walking) cause the release of endorphins. They are also a great way to release stress. Working out is the best way to let out the pressure that builds up inside you. Only make sure that you are not suffering from any disease (angina pectoris, myocardial infarction) that might be exacerbated by exercise.

  • DON’T DROWN YOURSELF

You never drown by going under the water. You drown when you don’t struggle to remain afloat. Nothing can pull you under that blanket of despair without your consent. Don’t dwell on things that cause anxiety and depression. One of the great ways to overcome depression is to watch your thinking. Think positive. Adopt a positive attitude.

Don’t ever give up trying to remain positive even if life is all negative. With a bit of self-exercise, you can pull yourself together. You don’t get to live forever. Living the life you are blessed with to the fullest. This is the only thing that counts in the end.
